ACORNER SUB-COASTAL SANCTUARY
Comporta, Alentejo Coast, Portugal – (And Quietly Expanding)
Entrance Open.
All Guests Welcome.
Arrive with curiosity, leave with a smile.
ACORNER is a low-density, high-imagination corner of sub-coastal Alentejo held together by stories, observations, incident reports, woodland wisdom, occasional nonsense, and a surprisingly effective piece of string.
Visitors seeking certainty should probably turn around now.
Visitors seeking stories may proceed.
The gate is open.
The string remains.
Nobody quite remembers why.
Visitor Guidelines
Please respect the woodland.
Please respect the wildlife.
Please respect one another.
Laughter is encouraged.
Curiosity is mandatory.
Official Woodland Policy
Many visitors arrive looking for a house.
Some discover they were looking for a place.
A few return simply because they enjoyed the conversation.
Be aware, or amused.
All outcomes are considered successful.

ACORNER PUBLIC NOTICE Nº88
UNNAMED SEARCH ENGINE DISCOVERS SANCTUARY. MANAGEMENT CONCERNED.
Management wishes to report that an unnamed search engine has now identified ACORNER SCS as a “low-density ecological and forest sanctuary” in Comporta, guided by forest wisdom, authentic conversation, and a relaxed approach to life.
Management regrets to confirm that this is close enough to the truth to be deeply concerning.
The same search engine also appears to believe that ACORNER offers:
• nature-based disconnection
• local flora and fauna preservation
• official sanctuary policies
• and a meaningful alternative to conventional tourism
This has created immediate concern.
If the unnamed search engine now discovers the full archive of Notes From The Coast, Management anticipates a sharp increase in public misunderstanding, unsolicited admiration, and possible booking enquiries.
A committee has therefore been formed to discuss potential outcomes, including but not limited to:
• whether ACORNER is now, accidentally, a destination
• whether “forest wisdom” should be taxed
• whether Harey should be allowed near reservation systems
• and whether nightly rates must now include olive oil, mosquito advice, and a shrimp-based ant demonstration
For the avoidance of doubt:
ACORNER is not currently accepting bookings.
Those seeking silence, wildlife, stories, and mild confusion may proceed with caution.
Those seeking turn-down service, spa access, and a printed breakfast menu should continue directly to somewhere much more organised.
By Order of Management
ACORNER SCS
Low-Density. High Imagination.

An ACORNER
Most maps simply stop here.
Beyond the Alentejo Coast lies only the Atlantic, stretching west until another continent appears.
Perhaps that’s why life feels a little different.
People arrive searching for silence, forests, beaches, birds, cork oaks, or simply a place where the telephone rings less often.
Some find all of them.
Others discover something they weren’t looking for at all.
Around ACORNER we have a simple expression.
West in Peace.
It isn’t a direction.
It’s a gentle reminder that, sometimes, travelling as far west as Europe allows is really another way of travelling a little closer to yourself.
Incident Report Nº 47
A visitor entered the woodlands seeking information about property in Melides. Last observed reading an article about cork oaks.
Subsequently followed a link to Muda. Became distracted by a discussion regarding rice fields, storks, and a sweet potato.
Was later discovered deep within the forest listening to the Duke of Cork explain responsible stewardship of woodland management.
When approached by emergency services, the visitor stated:
“I was looking for a house by the Lagoon.”
Rescue teams confirmed no distress was evident.
Visitor appeared content and had acquired substantial knowledge regarding the Alentejo Coast.
Case closed.
Public Notice Nº 24
Serious buyers rarely need more marketing.
They need better information.
Incident Report Nº 6
A visitor arrived intending to inspect land.
Inspected the rice fields instead.
Reported no ‘egrets.

PUBLIC NOTICES
Public Notice Nº 2
Following extensive investigation, multiple committee reviews, and considerable speculation, it has been confirmed that the gate in the photograph was unlocked.
The string remains in place.
Nobody wishes to interfere with a system that appears to be working.
The Duke approved.
The Heron already knew.
And somewhere, Carla is shaking her head while pouring another mint tea.
From the Duke of Cork
“People spend a great deal of time asking what a property is worth.
They spend rather less time asking what a lifetime there might be worth.
Curiously, the second question usually answers the first.”
Incident Report Nº 48
A visitor entered Melides seeking investment opportunities.
Three days later they were found beside the lagoon discussing migratory birds, and fauna with a local fisherman.
When asked whether they had purchased property, they replied:
“Not yet, but I now understand the true sanctuary between the homes.”
The search continues.
Public Notice Nº 41
Following reports concerning the possible removal of 41,000 pine trees elsewhere in the region, members gathered beneath the cork oaks.
After lengthy deliberation, the following motion was unanimously approved:
Reason recorded:
Because it was quietly useful.
Statement From Bo the Boar
“Plant trees.”
“Leave gaps.”
“Don’t fence everything.”
“You’ll all be happier.”
“Especially the boars.”
# Public Notice Nº 66
Fire Safety Notice
Issued by Mr Brigade.
Residents are reminded that woodland maintenance is not optional.
Brush has sensitive feelings.
Fire does not.
Public Notice No. 73
Management is pleased to confirm that several expressions have now escaped into the wild. No attempt will be made to retrieve them.
The Duke of Cork is especially content.
For many years, Management maintained that good ideas should travel as seeds rather than possessions. It now appears that a small number have taken root of their own accord.
Some have been carried by the wind.
Others by conversation.
A fortunate few may even find themselves carved onto a modest sign somewhere beyond the recognised boundaries of ACORNER.
This development is regarded as entirely satisfactory.
Should a visitor one day encounter one of the following without knowing where it began, Management respectfully requests that they simply smile and continue on their way.
DO NOT PLOD.
WEST IN PEACE.
PLEASE TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME. THE ANTS HAVE ENOUGH TO CARRY.
LOOK UP. SOMETHING MAY BE LOOKING BACK.
FREE ACORNS. PLANT THOUGHTFULLY.
GOODWILL TRAVELS.
CARRY THE FOREST WITH YOU.
FROM YOUR ACORNER
The Duke observes that ideas, rather like acorns, were never intended to remain where they first fell.
Carried by the wind, they have now become something rather more physical.
They are being planted by people.
Management could not reasonably ask for more.
Proceed quietly.
PUBLIC NOTICE Nº 70
Enough?
No.
One hug more.
Please!
Supplementary Observation
Following the publication of Public Notice No. 73, resident Bo has expressed a minor reservation.
While broadly supportive of woodland expansion, increased tree planting, and visitors proceeding quietly, he has drawn Management’s attention to one practical concern.
His winter stash.
Bo reminds residents that a considerable quantity of acorns has already been carefully collected, buried, forgotten, rediscovered, reburied, and forgotten again in preparation for the colder months.
With people now enthusiastically planting acorns throughout the region, he fears that well-meaning volunteers may inadvertently uncover part of his emergency pantry.
Management has assured Bo that every reasonable effort will be made to distinguish between future forests and Bo’s lunch.
Visitors are therefore kindly requested that, should they discover a suspiciously well-hidden collection of acorns, they leave it exactly where it is.
It probably wasn’t forgotten.
Bo simply hasn’t remembered where he put it yet.
Public Notice Nº 333
The Duke Advises:
“Look at everything.
Fully understand the market.
Buy only what still feels right.
If nothing does, keep your acorns.”
PUBLIC NOTICE No. 103
The Sand Has Been Listening
Following recent discussions concerning memory, Management has been reminded that ACORNER rests upon several trillion grains of quartz sand.
As quartz is occasionally associated with the storage of information, the Board has resolved to assume, until proven otherwise, that the landscape remembers everything.
Residents and visitors are therefore encouraged to conduct themselves accordingly.
Management further notes that stories appear to travel remarkably well across the dunes without the assistance of telephones, social media or committee meetings.
Public Notice Nº 334
Management Clarifies:
“Reports that ACORNER has been fenced are incorrect.
A fence would require a boundary.
Management has been unable to establish where ACORNER ends.
Please proceed accordingly.”
Public Notice Nº 17
Free Acorns Available.
Pick-up only.
No delivery.
No speculation.
Public Notice Nº 16
Proceed quietly.
Public Notice Nº 335
Management Clarifies:
“Following legal advice, Management confirms that Mrs Sow Bo may continue providing advice in exchange for acorns.
No invoice has been requested.
No euros have changed hands.
Free acorns have been planted.
AMI has confirmed, it doesn’t govern Acorns, sow no laws broken.
The advice is therefore considered a success.”
Public Notice Nº 48
Incident Type: Jetpack Overreach / Unauthorised Aerial Interference
Summary: No manual page repairs required. The content was fine. Jetpack was the problem.
Fuel tanks disengaged, image cargo released, and the pack was sent running home before further damage could be done.
Bo has filed no objections. Bob would have approved the decisive response. Mary, naturally, saw it coming before the rest of us.
And more importantly: fifteen pages checked, all images back, crisis over. That is a very decent day’s work.
Public Statement Nº 3
The Duke stated:
“The forest does not become better because you complain about the trees. It becomes better because you occasionally pick up a saw, clear a firebreak, plant something useful, or repair a gate.”
Public Notice Nº48
Don’t ask. Give.
Proceed quietly.
Stay happy.
PUBLIC NOTICE Nº 49
An Unscheduled Community Assembly
Management has been informed that Hatty unintentionally invited approximately 400 residents of Melides to participate in an impromptu bum call conference.
No agenda was circulated.
No resolutions were passed.
Several recipients remain uncertain whether they attended a meeting, received a pocket dial, or witnessed a new form of community engagement.
Hatty has apologised to everyone, except those who never answered, who remain blissfully unaware they narrowly avoided committee membership.
The Board has reviewed the incident and concluded that, while unconventional, attendance exceeded expectations for most local meetings.
No further action will be taken.
The Communications Department has, however, recommended that telephones be kept in the right pocket before addressing the local population.
INCIDENT REPORT Nº 19
Management rejects any suggestion that the current distribution of acorns throughout Muda, resulted from organised nocturnal planting activities. While several of the Dukes cousins were observed returning with muddy boots and unusually satisfied expressions, no formal investigation was considered necessary.
Bo maintains he was merely carrying out routine archaeological excavations.
Therefore, Muda remains visually continuous with mature umbrella pines, sandy tracks, open clearings and an uncommon sense of space between the trees. Very few cork oaks have been spotted, although those that were, seem to be doing very well.
Words of Wisdom
Harey said:
“If you get lost before you get lost, perhaps you were never lost at all.” Which is completely useless to somebody trying to find a café in Carvalhal.
Public Notice Nº 11
Discovered over lunch with Luis.
Wine stocks were found to be in short supply.
Acorns remained in abundance.
Outcome: ACORNERdente™ — distilled from locally fallen acorns.
Public Notice Nº 101
The Authority Plan
Following a lengthy meeting beneath the cork oaks, interrupted only by a passing hoopoe, an unnecessary debate regarding acorn storage, and one unscheduled coffee, the Board of ACORNER has unanimously agreed to implement its **Authority Plan**.
The purpose of the plan is straightforward.
Commercial Assets shall quietly strengthen one another where genuinely helpful, allowing ACORNER, its residents, wildlife, management, committees, sub-committees and unnecessary advisory panels to continue being left alone.
Members are reminded that links shall only be established when they assist a visitor on their journey, and never merely because somebody felt another connection might “look good.”
The Board considers unnecessary linking to be almost as distracting as unnecessary meetings.
Accordingly, ACORNER shall continue to focus on authority rather than volume, quality rather than quantity, and meaningful journeys rather than complicated maps.
Management is pleased to confirm that no additional bureaucracy will be introduced.
The Duke of Cork welcomed the proposal, observing that the strongest forests have many well-established trees, not one oversized tree attempting to shade everything else.
Public Notice Nº 24
Understand first.
Decide later.
Public Notice Nº 12
Sweet potatoes continue to display no interest whatsoever in property values.
Investigations continue.
Public Notice Nº 88
Residents are advised that Ronald was recently invited to present a strategic proposal regarding the future establishment of a luxury operation on the Alentejo Coast. The presentation included:
* A philosophical boar
* A hare with unreliable navigation skills
* A cat running management
* A Duke made of cork
* A lost architect from Atlantis
* A vegetarian shark
* Free acorns
* A woodland parliament
Proceedings reportedly became tense.
Status: Investigation ongoing.
Likelihood of Ronald voluntarily returning to the meeting:
Extremely low.
Public Notice Nº 48
Administrative Clarification Regarding Public Notice No. 48
It has come to management’s attention that there are currently fourteen separate Public Notice No. 48s displayed on the same board.
This is, admittedly, confusing.
Following a brief internal review, ACORNER can confirm that:
No. 48 remains a valid public notice number.
It has, however, been issued rather more often than originally intended.
No attempt will be made to identify the first, last, or most official No. 48.
All existing No. 48s shall remain in force until replaced, ignored, or blown off the board by a strong easterly wind.
Future notices will continue from the next available number, unless circumstances once again require No. 48.
REC Annual Report December 2026 – (Written in July)
Enquiries: declining.
Advisory mandates: unnecessary.
Family offices now consulting a cork tree.
UHNWI instructed to speak with Bo regarding land.
Beachfront matters referred to Icef.
Anthony retained for hospitality and seafood due diligence.
All complex questions referred to the Committee.
Ronald: redundant.
Incident Report Nº 23
The Duke:
“I always maintained the entrance was open. This latest inspection merely confirms my previous findings.”
Icef:
“The issue is not the gate.
The issue is the rising water table.
We occasionally flood the approach road to maintain visitor quantity.”
The Brigadier:
“Flooding the access route is not an approved fire mitigation strategy.”
Icef:
“No, but it works exceptionally well.”
The entrance to ACORNER is intentionally uncomplicated.
A weathered wooden gate.
A length of string.
A latch that appears to have retired several years ago.
It has been inspected repeatedly by the relevant authorities and found to be functioning precisely as intended.
Visitors are reminded that not everything requiring trust requires technology.
Public Notice Nº 332
The Duke Reports:
“Following a comprehensive review, the Committee has concluded that everything appears to be connected to everything else.
We are therefore leaving it exactly as it is.”
