Where to Eat in Comporta, Carvalhal and Along the Coast
Food is part of life in Comporta, from long lunches beside the Atlantic to simple meals in the villages and more considered dining within the area’s hotels.
The choice has grown considerably over the years. Beach restaurants remain an important part of summer life, while Comporta and Carvalhal villages now offer everything from traditional Portuguese cooking to bakeries, delicatessens and contemporary restaurants.
This is not intended to be a complete restaurant directory. It is a selection of places our visitors and clients regularly enjoy, arranged geographically from Comporta south towards Aberta Nova.
Opening periods can change, particularly at the beach restaurants, so reservations and current opening times should always be checked directly.
Comporta Beach
Comporta Café
One of the established names on Praia da Comporta, Comporta Café combines a relaxed beach setting with the long lunches that have become part of the Comporta experience.
Its position directly beside the Atlantic makes it as much about spending an afternoon at the beach as stopping simply for lunch.
Ilha do Arroz
Also at Comporta Beach, Ilha do Arroz has been part of the local restaurant landscape for many years.
Seafood, fish and Portuguese flavours accompany a particularly informal beach atmosphere, with the restaurant looking across the dunes and ocean. It remains one of the familiar places for visitors returning to Comporta each summer.
Comporta Village
Cavalariça
Set within a former stable in the centre of Comporta Village, Cavalariça brought a more contemporary style of dining to the village while retaining a strong connection to Portuguese ingredients and produce.
The building and courtyard are part of its character, making it quite different from the beach restaurants only a few kilometres away.
São João
São João represents the more traditional side of eating in Comporta Village.
It has long been a familiar choice for Portuguese cooking, grilled fish and seafood and remains useful precisely because it is a restaurant rather than a destination concept.
SADO
Part of the Sublime collection, SADO is located in Comporta Village and takes its inspiration from one of the defining features of the surrounding landscape: rice.
Its approach draws on the regional rice culture and ingredients of the Alentejo, providing another interpretation of local food away from Sublime’s main hotel in Muda.
Almo Comporta
In the centre of Comporta Village, Almo occupies the familiar café formerly known as Eucalyptus.
Under the same ownership but with a new name, it remains an informal village meeting place for breakfast, coffee, lunch or something in between. The eucalyptus tree that gave the café its former name still stands proudly on the terrace.
Its character is quite different from Comporta’s destination restaurants — and that is part of its appeal.
Torre
Dona Bia
Dona Bia is one of the long-established restaurants of Comporta, located beside the EN261 at Torre between Comporta and Carvalhal.
Its cooking remains firmly traditional, with local fish and seafood accompanied by the rice dishes for which the restaurant has long been known. Surrounded by the rice fields, it represents a rather different side of eating in Comporta from the newer beach clubs and hotel restaurants.
Muda
Sublime Comporta — Sem Porta
Sem Porta is the principal restaurant at Sublime Comporta in Muda.
Its cooking is strongly connected to seasonal Portuguese produce and the surrounding region, with ingredients drawn where possible from Sublime’s own organic garden and local producers.
For someone staying or owning a home around Muda, Sublime has become an important part of the area’s dining landscape.
Food Circle
Food Circle offers something considerably smaller and more intimate.
Set around an open fire and based around ingredients from the hotel’s organic garden and local producers, the experience is deliberately limited in scale. It is less a conventional restaurant than a close interaction between the kitchen, ingredients and guests.
Sublime now has several additional dining concepts at the resort, but Sem Porta and Food Circle remain useful reference points for understanding its original approach to food in Comporta.
Carvalhal Village
JNcQUOI Deli Comporta
On Avenida 18 de Dezembro in Carvalhal, JNcQUOI Deli brings the group’s familiar combination of food, retail and design to the village.
It forms part of Carvalhal’s continuing evolution from a traditional local high street into somewhere where everyday village life increasingly sits alongside international restaurants, boutiques and design.
Mercearia Pachecas Comporta
Also on Avenida 18 de Dezembro, Mercearia Pachecas provides a rather different Carvalhal experience.
Informal and rooted in the village, it is somewhere for food, drinks and the uncomplicated pleasure of sitting on Carvalhal’s increasingly lively high street.
La Simone — La Réserve
La Simone is the French bakery and pâtisserie at La Réserve in Carvalhal.
Bread, pastries and coffee make it particularly useful for breakfast or something considerably less formal than lunch or dinner. It also illustrates how much the everyday choice within Carvalhal itself has expanded.
INARI – Quinta da Comporta, Carvalhal
INARI is the restaurant at Quinta da Comporta, surrounded by the rice fields near Carvalhal.
The setting is quite different from both the village and beach restaurants. Here the landscape becomes part of the experience, with the rice fields providing an immediate connection to the agricultural character that shaped Comporta long before its development as an international destination.
Carvalhal Beach
SAL
SAL is one of the best-known restaurant names associated with Comporta.
Originally at Pego Beach, it is now at Carvalhal Beach. Its long association with the area and emphasis on fish, seafood and relaxed beach dining have made it a familiar destination for both Portuguese and international visitors.
Sublime Comporta Beach Club
Also at Carvalhal Beach, Sublime’s seasonal Beach Club brings the hotel’s approach to the Atlantic coast.
It provides a different experience from Sublime’s restaurants in Muda: firmly a beach restaurant, intended for a long summer lunch rather than an evening at the hotel.
Pego Beach
JNcQUOI Beach Club
JNcQUOI Beach Club occupies a privileged position at Praia do Pego.
The setting combines one of the area’s best-known beaches with the more polished restaurant and beach-club experience associated with JNcQUOI. For visitors spending the day around Pego, it has become one of the principal dining destinations on this part of the coast.
Aberta Nova Beach
Bar dos Tigres
Farther south, Bar dos Tigres at Praia da Aberta Nova provides a natural final stop on this journey down the coast.
Aberta Nova feels distinctly removed from the busier beaches around Comporta and Carvalhal, and the restaurant shares something of that character. It is another reminder that travelling only a relatively short distance along this coastline can produce a noticeably different experience.
Eating Around Comporta
Where you eat also provides a surprisingly good introduction to the geography of Comporta.
Comporta Village offers restaurants within walking distance of its shops and cafés. Carvalhal has developed an increasingly active village high street. Muda provides the quieter setting of Sublime, while the restaurants at Comporta, Carvalhal, Pego and Aberta Nova beaches follow the Atlantic coastline south.
